The Market Road Football Pitches have been named by users of booking website MyLocalPitch.com as London’s most outstanding local sports venue.

The football ground, which is partly funded by Arsenal Football Club and Islington Council, was given the ‘Outstanding London Sports Venue Award’ after a city-wide vote.

General manager Anthony Jarrett said the award reflects the community’s spirit towards the centre.

“It will resonate with a lot of people” he said. “There are not a lot of facilities like this in London.”

The pitch offers two 11-a-side pitches, three five-a-side pitches, a training room and a spectator area. It was re-opened by former Arsenal midfielder Liam Brady in September following a £2.1m refurbishment.

It’s always good to get an award for something

Mr Jarrett added that the award had driven more people to use the already popular facilities.

“We have had a lot of business as a result” he said. “It’s always good to get an award for something as it raises the profile and it focuses attention on something.”

The award was granted after users of MyLocalPitch rated facilities based on their pitch quality, venue amenities, and customer experience.

We are delighted that they are the very first recipients of this award

Co-Founder of MyLocalPitch Jamie Foale said: “We were hearing so many positive stories that we thought we should let the venues know what our players thought of them. Given the quality of experience people have at Market Road we are delighted that they are the very first recipients of this award.”

Campaigners and senior politicians lambasted the Premier League after it rejected calls for clubs to pay above the so-called “living wage” to their staff despite the average £50m windfall that each will receive from the £5.1bn sale of television rights.
