Wireless connections across the central parts of Campus have been unavailable since yesterday afternoon.
Despite online services (Canvas and FindIt) working as normal, meaning lectures can still regularly proceed, the University’s wireless networks (UoBWifi, UoBGuest and Eduroam) are still inaccessible, causing disruption to many students attempting to access WiFi around campus.
The initial downtime affected e-mails, printers and network drive access.
In a statement on the University’s intranet, the University said ‘you may be aware that late yesterday afternoon one of the contractors on site cut through a fibre optic cable. This has led to the disruption of some phones, internet and related services…
‘Over the next few days some of the services that have been restored may need further work to improve resilience. This could mean that some services are interrupted but we will do everything possible to minimise this.’
At present, all phone services have been restored on campus and in Selly Oak. WiFi has also been restored to the Main Library. In a network outage update, the UoB Service Desk have announced that normal service is expected to proceed later in the day.
